Metabolic Typing with Andrew Stearns

September 24th, 2010

Andrew StearnsYuri: Hey, guys, Yuri Elkaim here, and with me today—I’m looking forward to this one, actually—I’ve got a good friend of mine, Andrew Stearns, who’s a fellow holistic nutritionist and trainer out of New Jersey.

We met each other a couple months ago at a Mastermind meeting, and I’m looking forward to picking his brain today because he’s got some really interesting views on nutrition, especially when it comes to metabolic typing and kind of holistic, naturopathic views to helping you, you know, live a lot healthier through food. So, with that in mind, Andrew, are you there?

Andrew: I’m right here, Yuri. How are you?

Yuri: Great, buddy, thank you for joining me today. I’m looking forward to this. I guess before we get into, before what I wanna throw at you, why don’t you tell our listeners a bit about your background, you know, where did you come from, and, I guess, you know, who you help?

Andrew: Sure, sure. I’ve been in the wellness industry for about fourteen years now professionally. I started off as a personal trainer; I trained a lot of athletes. I trained myself quite a bit as an athlete; I played football, baseball, basketball.

And I admit it: I’m a former recovering body builder. Even though I didn’t compete, I took a lot of the misinformation out there, applied it to my nutrition, and fell into a lot of the pitfalls that I see people falling into with regard to eating foods that are marketed very heavily, eating foods that are cheap.

When I came across metabolic typing, it wasn’t necessarily to provide or help clients reach a certain goal; it was to help me. And the ego deflation that happened when I’m supposed to be the expert on health and performance had to go see a nutritionist to get myself truly healthy, it was necessary.

But once I did that, I went through the schooling, the process with a person by the name of Dr. Dennis Passante, got registered as a holistic nutritionist who specializes in metabolic typing, and that’s something that I share with each and every one of my clients today.

Yuri: Nice, very cool. So, for those who are unaware of what metabolic typing is, can you explain that?

Andrew: Sure, sure. I’ll do my best. Metabolic typing, simply, is customized nutrition that’s appropriate for you. Metabolic typing recognizes that nutrients behave differently in different people’s bodies, and through a series of tests, we can find out what your metabolic type is or, essentially, what foods are gonna be best for you to perform, look, and feel, you know, the best that you can be.

So, there’s a series of tests that we look at different control centers of the body; for example, the autonomic nervous system, the oxidative system or, simply put, your metabolic processes. Metabolism is the word thrown around a little too loosely, but what goes into your metabolism is what we take a look at.

Yuri: Interesting. And I would, from my experience I think some people get the term metabolic typing with body typing mixed up, so are you talking something differently than the endomorphs, the ectomorphs, and the mesomorphs just so that people are clear about that?

Andrew: Certainly, certainly. Now, the body-type diet was introduced by Dr. Abravanel, which, you know, a brilliant person, and he based nutrition and body, you know, diets based on body types, similar to what you said about the person who looks like the athlete, the pear, the apple, and so forth, just to simplify it.

Not to take anything away from Dr. Abravanel ’cause we do use some of that body-typing information in our practice, but it goes much deeper than that. Whereas some of those nutrition approaches fail, such as Atkins diet or a one-size-fits-all type of approach, we incorporate that into it, but yes, metabolic typing is completely different from that, although we do borrow some information that he was able to uncover.

Yuri: Cool. And I guess,  the metabolic approach can also partly explain why some people that are following the same diet get very different results. Is that correct?

Andrew: Oh, and you said it, Yuri. That’s a great comment right there. The example I give people is the Atkins diet. It’s very familiar and to a lot of people, it’s very sexy.

You know, eat all the fat and protein you want, and lose all this weight. And that’s true for some people, but rarely do they keep it off; not to mention, thirty, forty, fifty percent of the people who both see no results or gain more weight on it.

So, that clearly tells us that one size does not fit all; it doesn’t even work with clothes, much less something as complex as your body inside and out and your nutrition. So, when it comes to a one-size-fits-all diet, it’s only gonna fit a small percentage of the population and usually not us; nor is it the healthiest way to approach, you know, your health and your life.

Yuri: Interesting. So, how does somebody go about, is it possible to self-assess what your metabolic type would be? You mentioned a couple tests you guys do. How do you get assessed to determine the type of metabolic type you are?

Andrew: Sure. Now, here’s the real simple way to do it. I’ll forewarn you: This is a little tongue-in-cheek, but if you step outside of your house and every single person in your neighborhood or your tribe looks like you—okay?—then you probably wouldn’t know what your metabolic type is.

In other words, if there’s a group of people here going on a hunt and eating indigenous foods, if you don’t have adequate transportation to get anywhere else in the world, then yeah, you know what you should eat ’cause your ancestors have grown up on that land, in that area for hundreds if not thousands of years.

I’m kidding about that a little bit, but the people listening to this audio program right now, reading this, that’s not us, okay? I live in New Jersey, in the United States, so unless I’m Native American, one hundred percent, and I can trace everything back to those ancestors, I’m probably gonna need different foods to have optimal health, to avoid disease, to perform at my best.

Metabolic typing takes into consideration genetics, takes into consideration, again, what your ancestors ate and what you should eat, but we live in a Melting Pot society. I believe you’re in Toronto, Yuri; like I said, I’m in the United States. If people are listening to this in the U.K., in England, you need to go through this testing. How do you do that?

Well, obviously, like I said, if you’re listening to this, you have some questions, and the nutritional requirements aren’t as clear-cut as they are for some people—unless you’re an Eskimo, unless you’re a tribe in South America.

So, what you can do is get an advisor. If you go to the metabolic-typing Web site, which I don’t have on me, you can look for an advisor in your area. What you can also do is by the metabolic-typing book and read up a little bit about it.

It has a mini test in there; not to take away from any advisor, but if it’s something you really wanna get your hands on quickly and do a little research on, you know, just do a search for metabolic typing, get the book, read up a little bit about it, but I would definitely urge you get somebody, a nutritionist, an advisor who specializes in this and can take you, you know, hold your hand through the process.

Eating For Energy-The Search For Perfect Health

September 10th, 2010

human energyMuch has been written about Perfect Health but how do you know if you are on the right track or not?How can you measure or see the results on your own?

I have always wondered if I can trust my Doctor or Health Care Provider to supply me with the information I need to take care of “me”. Yes “me”. Have you ever wondered the same?

Jamie Lloyd touched on the subject of pH balance and I took my own pH test this morning(as I do every month) and it still is at 7.45. Wow, that is part of the reason I must feel so great.

Audra Starkey talks about taking 100% responsibility for your own life and she is so right. When I decided to take that responsibility and took action, I saw results. Well I did see them, one teaspoon at a time. That is how I explain it to Pierrette every morning. I ask how she feels and she tells me ,”One teaspoon better than yesterday”.

Being here on Yuri’s Eating for Energy blog has given me much insight into the world of Perfect Health. I am so thankful for all the help and information I receive and share with all of you.

The Search For Perfect Health leads us to wonder if it really is attainable. Here is just one example of what I mean:Should you be juicing or eating your vegetables instead. Many wonder if juicing leaves all the fiber behind? That is a great question. The answer is not so simple. Each and everyone has a different metabolic state and therefore their is not a perfect answer unless you really know your body.

  • Why are you juicing in the first place? The answer should be to obtain the maximum vitamins and minerals into your blood stream as quickly as possible. By juicing they start getting into your bloodstream in as little as 30 minutes. That is a real shot in the arm if you are looking for energy to workout, go to work, take care of the kids etc. Juicing is quick, effective and delivers the results you look for.
  • Why do you not eat the vegges instead of juice? Does your body need the fiber is the next question you need to answer. If your pH is in balance and your digestive system is in great shape the answer is you need the energy more than the fiber. The fiber takes much longer to digest and yes it can be very useful but you need to know when and why you need the fiber. Seem complicated? At the beginning all these questions need to be understood and Yuri’s book Eating For Energy gives you the answers.

I love to juice before I go to work. I love to juice before I workout even if that is only a 30 minute walk in the morning. I love to eat my vegetables when I get home from work and get the fiber to help keep my digestive track in great shape.

I love to take my smoothie in the morning when I get up because the fruits help eliminate the waste from the night before and keep my digestive track clean and feeling great.

Juicing puts much less effort on your heart and lungs and gives your body a chance to use the vitamins and minerals.

If you are looking to attain Perfect Health as I was just start by reading every line of Eating For Energy and digest it’s content. The vitamins and minerals for your mind will give you that Perfect Health perspective on your life, just like it has in mine, Pierrette’s, Audra’s, Lloyd’s and so many others.

We are all just like you, sorry no we are you in reality. We just want to share our feelings and emotions because we feel so great and want you to also.

Striving For Optimum Health. Why Would You NOT Pursue It?

September 10th, 2010

healthyYou know it never ceases to amaze me how people don’t take the time to look after their health. I mean why would you not strive to achieve optimum health?

The alternatives are certainly not good.

Constant sickness, exhaustion, a lack of fitness, stress, unhealthy relationships, premature aging – the list goes on.

Just like Yuri teaches us in his book – Eating for Energy - good health is a way of life.

It doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy – particularly if you’ve adopted an unhealthy lifestyle for quite a few years. But with some stoic determination on your part, the results that you achieve will be nothing short of life changing.

So if there is any ONE THING that I believe you must spend most of your time focussing on as you go about your daily lives – it’s striving for optimum health.

You see, you can never overestimate how good you feel when you eat well and exercise regularly as opposed to eating junk food and leading a sedentary lifestyle. There really is no comparison.

So start taking 100% responsibility for your life – no one else can make you eat healthy food or drag you out the door to do some exercise (unless of course you have a Personal Trainer which can definitely be a good thing if you lack motivation!)

Because when you do, you will begin to notice that everything else in your life will improve as well. From your relationships with those who are closest to you, to improvements in your job because when you feel healthy, you are much happier at home and in the workplace.

So stop thinking about it. Strive to achieve optimum health and your life will begin to change for the better in so many ways.

Kind regards,

Audra Starkey

Eating for Energy-Hands On

September 5th, 2010

FreshFruitSmoothieI often wondered what I would say to friends and family about my new found “Eating For Energy” lifestyle. Many listen politely and do nothing. Others ask questions and do nothing. As you have already guessed, most do nothing about anything I say.

Changing strategies was very difficult because Pierrette & I are so clear about all the benefits that Eating For Energy has done for us. Well, that is what needs to be done if you want to remain committed to yourself and if you want to spread the joy of feeling and being full of energy.

If you want to show people what you are doing, be Hands On. Show them how to juice and have them taste the best drinks in the world.

If your daughter has a boyfriend, have him over and show him. Do you understand what I am saying? Stop talking about it and do it!

Many of you will read this article and say, yeah, yeah, easier said then done. So did I but, as my energy level increased and became a part of my daily life I soon discovered that talking served no purpose whatsoever.

Pierrette has a printed copy(photocopied) of the Eating For Energy book on our kitchen table at all times. When people are around we take the time, argue a little but always have people taste test a smoothie or other juice and the faces tell us what to do next.

  • People only believe what they can touch, smell, see or taste.
  • Stop talking and have taste test available. Don’t ask, just have them taste. It is incredible how people’s faces light up.
  • Be bold and direct, you have nothing but good health to sell. How much is that worth?

Becoming “Hands On” is the only way to get your message across.

Many of you are here for the first time. Do you have a copy of Eating For Energy yet?

I ask you this only because when you think about it, when was the last time you spent $39.99 on your health? The last time you went to the restaurant cost more than that I am sure. Get serious, if you are here and have any interest in Eating  For Energy, buy it now and I will see you on the other side as they say.

Thanks for being here,

Perfect Health-Eating For Energy Decision

August 26th, 2010

When is the day you will decide it is time for a change? Being in Perfect Health is a decision. It will not happen unless you make it happen.

The Law Of Attraction will only work if you “Make” it come to you. Losing weight is a problem only if you are” not” looking for a solution. Weight loss as an industry” fails” terribly to hold you accountable to you.

If I tell you, you need to exercise in order to lose weight, what happens? You tell yourself that until you exercise you can’t lose, right? Well, losing weight has nothing to do with exercising. Your mind tells you what you want to hear. Change the recording and the message will become clear, immediately.

  • Being Obese is not the way your body is meant to be. In order to think clearly and focus on your dreams, your body needs energy, oxygen, blood flow, good digestion, proper nutrition…Give it junk food and it will use all the energy it can to digest and try to find the nutrients it needs to survive(your body I am talking about). Do you understand? If you do, congratulations because three or more years ago I had no clue.
  • Eating for Energy gives you the tools to understand. I did not understand because I really did not know what was wrong.
  • I am convinced today, that my Doctor did not have a clue what was wrong.
  • I know for a fact now that I am responsible for me.
  • How could I expect others to be responsible for me if I am not responsible for me?

Taking care of you should be your #1 priority in life. Do you agree? Well, like Dr. Phil says, “How is it working for you?

Eating for Energy is only a guide. If you are looking for guidance you need to start somewhere. Pierrette & I could copy and rewrite all that we know, package it and sell it back to you but the time it will take is too long. We want you to start today.

Go to Eating For Energy right know. Forget all the sales pitch, the interviews, the referrals ect. Just scroll down the first page to the sales button. Click and go and buy it now. Invest in you right this minute and follow Pierrette & I as we guide you to Perfect health.
