How a fit and supposedly “healthy” athlete lost all his hair, could barely stay awake, and was more lethargic than a 100-year old turtle.
And, how he turned it all around!
.
My name is Yuri Elkaim and, in a nutshell, that describes my existence for the first 20 (or so) years of my life.
I grew up active, playing every sport imaginable but with a particular interest and ability in soccer.
I ended up devoting the majority of my teenage years training hard and playing soccer at the highest youth level in Canada. I later played varsity soccer for 4 years at the University of Toronto (where I graduated with a degree in Kinesiology) before pursuing soccer professionally, both in Canada and in France.
During those years, I ate as the “experts” had advised me to eat…
Lots of pasta, carbs, cereals, etc… Basically to eat lots of grains because those who would be my best sources of “energy”.
But boy were they ever wrong. It wasn’t until after I finished university and my pro soccer career that I started to ask myself the following questions…
“Why is it that I need to take an afternoon nap every day?”
“Why is it that my body is so stiff and sore all the time?”
“Was there another cause for my auto-immune condition (Alopecia) which caused me to lose my hair when I was 17, other than what doctors were telling me…”it just happens”?”
Man oh man, were they ever wrong!
As I started to look for answers I had no idea that ALL of these things were directly related to the foods I had been eating for years.
You see, growing up, I never really ate many fruits or vegetables. For me, it was all about cereals, sandwiches, pasta, and lots of dairy.
What I didn’t realize was that these very foods were killing me!
Because of constant exposure and a damaged digestive system, my body was no seeing these common consumed foods as allergens. And, as it would do against any “foreign invader”, it began mounting immune responses to these foods.
But I continued to eat the same way without having any idea as to what was going on.
Then, when I was 17, my hair began falling out!
And not a single medical doctor even hinted at the fact that my diet could be at the root of the problem.
Essentially, my body’s immune system was so hypersensitive from constant “bombardment” that it had turned against itself, manifesting in a hair loss condition called Alopecia.
As you can imagine, at just 17 years of age, losing ALL of the hair on your body was not a great thing.
Nonetheless, I carried on without knowing what to do.
Fast-forward 8 years…
It wasn’t until I was 25 that it hit me in the head like a stray golf ball!
Could the foods I had been eating have caused all these problems? My hair loss, feeling so tired, getting sick all the time???
None of this made any sense to me until I pursued studies in holistic nutrition. During my studies, I was exposed to mind-blowing nutrition and health information that I had no idea even existed.
I had access to some of the best minds in nutrition and naturopathic medicine that got me thinking differently about how foods were affecting my body.
I was, for the first time in my life, exposed to the power of raw foods. And, in an effort to “cure” myself, I ventured full throttle into raw foods and plant-based nutrition.
And it wasn’t long before I started feeling more alive and more energetic, not needing to take a nap every day.
I looked better than ever. My eyes were bright and I had a glow about me.
And the coolest part was that my hair started growing back. I had removed ALL the problematic foods from my diet and replaced them with natural, whole foods and a predominantly raw diet.
I couldn’t believe what was happening to me – It’s was amazing!
I just had to share my success (and knowledge) with the world.
So, to start, I began experimenting with many of my personal training (did I mention that I had been training clients for several years?) and nutrition clients.
I had them cut the “crap” out of their diets and put in the “good”, and they too started seeing amazing changes from losing weight to having more energy, and everything in between.
As these transformations continued, I felt it my duty to share my passion and knowledge about the power of plant-based foods, especially when consumed raw, with the world!
That was my motivation for writing Eating for Energy.
I believe that everything happens for a reason and, looking back, I’m happy that everything happened the way it did. I’m glad that I lost my hair. I’m glad that I felt like crap for years.
Because, as a result of my challenges and eventually transformation, I have been able to inspire tens of thousands of others to do the same.
But I want you to know that I’m not to here to convert you into a 100% raw foodist. If you want to go that route that’s fine.
I’m not 100% raw but I do believe following a predominantly raw plant-based diet is beneficial for ALL of us.
I don’t get hung up on labels and neither should you. My goal with Eating for Energy is not about becoming a “raw foodist” but, instead, to educate you about making the healthiest possible food choices and to inspire you to help you live your best life ever!
And I GUARANTEE that that will happen for you once you apply the simple, yet powerful, nutrition principles that I share with you in my program.
If you’ve looked into following a raw food diet I know it can appear daunting. Believe me, I was there. I picked up all the raw food books and spent 24-48 hours preparing those elaborate dehydrated meals. After a while I got sick of it!
In my mind, it just never made sense. Who on earth has that amount of time to prepare or wait for a healthy meal? I sure don’t!
And that’s why, in Eating for Energy, I’ve compiled 120 simple and delicious raw food recipes, using fresh ingredients, that take less than 10 minutes to prepare. These are the very same recipes that helped me heal my body…
And they can do the same for you!
If you’re looking to finally lose weight, have more energy, and live your healthiest life ever, then this blog and Eating for Energy are for you.
We’re here to inspire you and show you the possibilities that exist once you make some simple changes to the way you eat.
Because I know you’re a real person, you don’t live in the forest, you have commitments in your life, you don’t have all day to prepare meals, and that’s why Eating for Energy is…
The raw food diet for REAL people!
Anyone can do it…including you!
Eat alive and you will thrive!

Hi Yuri,
Not sure if you spend much time in San Francisco, but we have an amazing raw food restaurant here called Cafe Gratitude. They have published recipe books as well, that include nearly everything on their menu. I highly recommend their books – and if you are ever visiting, defintely add lunch or dinner at the restaurant to your itinerary!

Thanks Sharon.
San Fran is on my places to visit. And I’ve heard really good things about cafe gratitude.
We’ll do lunch when I come to the bay area! Thanks.
Hi Yuri!

I just wanted to say how awesome your podcasts are! And now I see this blog!
You’ve definitely motivated me to include a larger percentage of raw foods into my diet, just today I bought some dates (never had them before!) so that I could make a date-cashew mix to have with fresh fruit.I don’t intend on going 100% raw as of yet, but am planning on gradually making the percentage in favour of raw foods compared to cooked.
I can’t wait to take a look at your book, and am going to be doing a short review of your podcasts when I get the chance to.
Anyways, great work on all of this, you are a good motivation! Maybe I can even encourage my husband to get more into the raw
do you know of any really good raw food restaurants in Toronto? I want to visit one, but am a bit lost on which one would be best.
Hey Nikki,
Thank for your kind comments and wanting to spread the message about my podcast. I know you’ll enjoy Eating for Energy as well. A really good raw food restaurant in Toronto is called “Live”. It’s located at Dupont and Spadina. Very good food!
Hi Yuri. I like your blog. You may want to check the pop-over in IE. I see a small part of the graphic and that’s it – no text or anything. In Chrome looks fine.
(Feel free to delete this comment)
Now I see that I’ve already told you about this, but maybe you missed it. Anyway, your pop-over is cut off (you can only see about a third of the image) and in Firefox it’s very annoying, because you can’t even close it. It’s located too high on the page so you can’t see the X.
Hi Yuri,
I am looking to get some certification on nutrition (without heading to University or Collage). I noticed that you are a RHN with CNNS or something like that. Their cert is about $5000.
Do they have a bend towards raw food and stuff like that?
Do you feel they offer a well rounded training?
Let me know of any other college you heard off that also offer some training heavy on naturaral foods.
Your book is on my “to buy” list… just need to finish the 2- 3 I am reading.
Cheers,
Eric
Vancouver.
Yes, I would recommend the CSNN for a great and well-rounded holistic nutrition education. It changed my life, and subsequently thousands of others!
Hi! I am not sure if I am posting in the right section but I have some questions regarding the raw food diet. I am a raw foodist (100%) for the last 3 months and I really enjoy it! Thank you for your great ebook “eating for energy”! It is really helpful!
However, I would like to ask you if i can drink hot herbal beverages (herbal teas) and raw cocoa drink (with hot water)?
I have been told that it is dangerous to consume raw almonds because they contain or release cyanide. Is it true?
Can I consume spirulina tablets? (i.e. Marcus Rohrer)
How about sundried tomatoes and dried fruits that are sold unpacked?
What should we take care of when we buy olives?
These are my questions for the time. Thank you in advance!
I’m not fanatical about being 100% raw so if you want hot beverages like tea, etc.. then go for it. I’m not sure about the raw almond issue. Spirulina is fine in my opinion but I’d prefer to go with the powder instead of capsules. Dried foods should be organic whenever possible to avoid sulphites. Olives, I don’t know if there’s really a “healthy” version of commercially available olives. Hope that helps.
are there raw food restaurants in toronto oakville ontario canada region
Yes, there is LIVE food bar at Dupont and Spadina (in toronto) and Rawlicious in the Junction. Both amazing raw restaurants.
hello yuri and thanks for sharing your experiences!
would like to ask you tow things please:
1. what are the benefits we can still got from cooked veg?
2. do you eat meat? what do you think about raw fish (Japanese food)? or raw red meat even (LOL)?
best regards,
I did your 30 days Total wellness cleanse. Wonders!
Does Eating for Energy have more to offer other than what I already have from the total cleanse?
It’s got a ton of different raw recipes (120 that take less than 10 minutes to prepare) and the program is more focused on eating raw foods.
Does Eating for Energy tell you what fruits and vegs. should be organic and which ones do not have to be organic
Yes, we actually provide that in a separate email to those who purchase the program.
Hey Yuri,
Do you know of any raw restaurants in Denver??
Sorry Brina, I don’t.
Thanks for sharing Steve. You can do this!
Fabulous blog, Yuri! I’ll look forward to reading more posts.
All the best!
Caitlyn
Thanks Caitlyn.
