Raw Food Smoothie Recipes

March 23rd, 2010

iStock_000003025292SmallIf the last smoothie that you had came from the mall, I have big news for you. While it might have been made fresh to order, and it might have contained all sorts of delicious fruits, it was probably about as healthy for you as a big, heaping bowl of chocolate ice cream – with whipped cream and sprinkles.

Yes, those smoothies from the fast-food joints are not smoothies that are going to do you any good. If you want a true smoothie – one made only from raw ingredients, and one that is going to make you feel great inside and out, then there is only one place to go – your own kitchen.

Not only will a smoothie made at home cost you pennies on the dollar as compared to what you can buy at the mall, you can control the contents in a way that will really benefit you.

For instance, let’s say it is early in the morning, but not early enough. You have five minutes to get out the door and head to work – no time to brew a cup of coffee, and certainly no time for a properly prepared breakfast.

You could stop somewhere and pick something up, but this recipe will take less time than even the most efficient drive-through window. All you need to do is toss a handful of leftover greens from last night’s dinner – be that spinach, kale or lettuce – into the blender, along with a cored apple, a drizzle of honey, and a cup of ice water. After less than a minute of blending, you have a great, healthy green smoothie that you can pour into a travel mug and enjoy on your way into work. It is nutritious, delicious, modifiable and incredibly easy. What more could you ask for in the morning?

But what if it’s not the morning? What if you’ve just come in from a hard workout, and you need to replace all the fuel you’ve just burned in your system?

You could grab a glass of pasteurized and otherwise dead milk, mixed with a dose of chocolate-flavored syrup. But why not replace the fuel with something of a higher octane than that?

Grab your trusty blender, and toss in a handful of your favorite fruits and berries, along with a few ice cubes, a cup of water and some nut milk – almond tends to work best for flavor, but go with whatever you prefer here. There are other milks available, including raw soy milks, so experiment a little, and find out what works best for you.

If you like a little more sweetness than the berries and fruit provides, add a bit of raw honey or agave syrup. Blend until smooth, and drink while it’s still cold. You’ll get a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals, fluids to replace what you’ve sweated out, and some protein to help those tired muscles to recover. And you’ll do it without all the added processed sugar and the hard-to-process milk products that your regular smoothie stop will usually toss in.

3 Surefire Ways to Get More Fruits and Vegetables Into Your Diet

November 19th, 2009

iStock_000002815321SmallI was doing an interview yesterday and one of the topics that came up was about how does someone get more fruits and vegetables into their diet.

Seems like a pretty obvious answer but the difficulty is that most people simply don’t get enough fruits and vegetables in their diet. I believe that most North Americans get an average of 1.5 servings per day. That’s pretty insane considering that the recommended daily intake is between 5-10 servings.

With that in mind, here are 3 surefire ways to help you at least double the number of plant-based foods you consume each day.

1. Adopt a Mono Meal Mindset

I’m not saying that you need to follow a raw food mono meal diet (although you would greatly benefit from doing so) but rather I’m suggesting that you adopt the practice of eating several of one type of food at a time.

For instance, if you are used to eating one apple as a snack, then you might as well eat 2 or 3 (or more). There’s no down side to eating too many fruits and vegetables.

So the idea with mono meals is to eat any particular fruit or vegetable to the point of satiation. Since these foods are lower in calories, you’ll be able to eat more of them before you get full.

Mono meals also facilitate digestion because you are eating simply and your digestive system doesn’t have to work over time breaking down complex food combinations.

2. Liquify Your Meals

I love smoothies. They are such an easy and convenient way of getting more fruits and veggies into your body. There are so many different smoothie recipes that you can enjoy and the beauty is that any given one can almost provide your entire fruit and vegetables requirements for a single day.

For instance, I often like to make this smoothie:

1 apple
1 banana
2 handfuls of spinach
Juice of 1 lime
1 tbsp spirulina (optional)
2 cups water

As you can see, this smoothie recipe easily gives me 4-5 servings in just 500 ml of easy to digest, delicious smoothie action.

Smoothies are convenient because you can blend everything up and take it with you on the go. Instead of grabbing that morning coffee, you can easily make a nutrient-packed smoothie and get your day started right.

3. Add Variety to Your Diet

I think a lot of people don’t get enough fruits and vegetables simply because they don’t like the taste or find them boring. That’s obviously a result of a polluted diet full of processed foods that have destroyed the palette.

Besides getting rid of such garbage foods, one of way of enjoying “good” food is to try new things.

The next time you go shopping try adding a new fruit or vegetable into your basket. Even if it’s something you’ve never tried before don’t worry – you’ll be prompted to seek out ways to enjoy by looking for yummy recipes, etc…

And you never know…you might fall in love with some new foods. This is how I fell in love with coconuts, mangosteens, durians, and many other delicious fruit.

Greens and Beet Salad

September 17th, 2009

new saladAfter a kettlebell workout yesterday, I made an incredible salad that really hit the spot.

And I’d like to share this wonderful recipe with you.

Sure a salad isn’t your typical post-workout meal but you just can’t beat top quality nutrition (and lots of it) after exerting yourself.

Here’s what was in my “Greens and Beet Salad”

2 beets, boiled and chopped
1 head boston lettuce, chopped
1 handful snap peas
1/2 cucumber, chopped
8 cherry tomatoes, halved
8 mushrooms, halved
3 tbsp goat cheese, grated

Dressing:

3 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp flax oil
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Dash of salt and pepper

You’ll notice that YES I did add goat cheese to this salad. Although I’m not a big fan of dairy, I occasionally like a little goat cheese to spice up some of my dishes.

Also notice that I cooked the beets. Oh my god! They’re not raw!

Who cares.

I find they taste better when they’re softened.

You don’t have to be 100% raw to enjoy great healthy meals.

However, the more raw, the better.

Enjoy!

2 of My Favourite Healthy Banana Smoothies

August 18th, 2009

I’m a big fan of healthy smoothies. They’re such an easy way to get tons of great nutrition in an easy to digest format. I also like bananas. And it just so happens that I’ve got 2 amazing banana smoothies that I’m going to share with you today.

These are truly my 2 favourite smoothies of all time. They are so good! These come straight from the 120 raw food recipes included in my book, Eating for Energy

Chocolate Peanut Butter Monkey

1 banana
1-2 tbsp peanut butter
2-3 tbsp dried shredded coconut (optional but amazing)
1-2 tbsp raw cacao
2 cups water (or rice/nut milk)

Watch me prepare this banana smoothie in this video:

Bananamania

I saved the best for last. What makes this smoothie so good is the inclusion of fresh young coconut. If there’s one “nut” everyone should incorporate into their raw food diet, it’s coconut. So many nutritional benefits and healthy fats.

1 banana
Water from 1 young coconut
1 cup cashews
2-3 tbsp young coconut meat
1-2 dates

Watch the video for more details to the recipe:

So there you have it. Two of my all-time best raw food smoothies. Give them a whirl and let me know what you think by leaving a comment.
