The Peaks and the Valleys

December 2nd, 2010

That last couple of months have had some highs and some lows, and now I’m writing to share it with everyone.

Valleys First

Back during the beginning of October, I found myself exhausted. Thankfully, I had enough gas in the tank to make it through work okay, but as soon as I came home, that was it, my day was done. I could never remember feeling that tired before and wondered if I was coming down with a cold, but I didn’t feel sick. Just very tired. After about a week, I finally made a connection. I had just started a parasite cleanse kit, and it was a day or two later that I felt so worn down. I hoped that this meant the exhaustion was due to the cleanse working and killing a bunch of bad things in my body.

The way the cleanse works is you take it for fifteen days, stop for five, and take it for another fifteen. I had to wait and see if I recovered during those five days, and was thankful I was only taking the evening dose rather than both the morning and evening doses (which you can do if you are small enough). Happily, I did perk up during those five days, and figured the second fifteen would not be as bad.

Then I caught a cold. I was seriously hoping I might skip that experience this year. Alas, that dream was dashed at the beginning of the cold season. There were a couple bad days, but I persevered through it. I bought some tea for fighting colds. It tastes fabulous. I would drink it just because. I think it’s the cinnamon bark and liquorice root that makes it so yummy.

Also, regarding my Candida, I’m still suffering from it more than I like. (To read my original post, click here). I recently purchased a cleanse kit for Candida since my diet alone is not enough, and I’ve been slipping and eating things I shouldn’t, but honestly, I doubt I can do much better than I have for an extended period of time, so I hope the cleanse can give me a boost. I wanted to wait a couple weeks before starting it since I had just finished the parasite cleanse. Maybe this weekend.

I need to jump back on the exercise bandwagon. Once I fell off, I kind of stayed off. It was easier during the summer. I got up about and hour and a half earlier than normal, which gave me plenty of time to exercise and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. It’s hard to crawl out of bed at 6:15 AM when it’s pitch black outside, and I find myself getting up at the last minute to get ready for work. Something to work on.

Okay, now the Peaks

Compliments. Everyone loves compliments, and it makes my hard work worth it when I receive them. For a while, every time my Dad saw me, he asked if I’d lost more weight. I hadn’t, but it made me feel good to hear him ask. I think he was just so unused to seeing me look like this it took a while for him to adjust. At one point I did take my measurements and had lost a couple inches even though no pounds had dropped, so remember, the scale alone is not the end all. It’s also nice when people at work notice and comment. Nothing like someone asking if you have lost weight and saying you look good to bring a smile to your face.

I am also more regular than I have ever been, and for those who have read Eating for Energy, you know exactly what I mean. For those who haven’t, it means I poop more than once a day. (I know, thanks for sharing, right? You’re welcome). But seriously, it is a good indicator of how well things are working internally. I’ll leave this particular subject alone now.

Some more tidbits. My hair is shiny and healthy looking. I’m not totally sure how much is attributed to the fact I switched shampoo brands, but I know my diet is a major factor. I supplement with krill oil everyday and try to add as many healthy fats to my diet as I can, like coconut, extra virgin olive oil and flax oil.

My teeth are also doing better. I suffered from sensitive teeth over the past couple of years, and was using toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth. It worked at first, and then my teeth began hurting again. A couple months ago, I switched to a more natural fluoride-free toothpaste and have had only one moment of pain (when I went from something hot directly to something cold) so I’m extremely pleased. It makes me wonder what my old toothpaste was doing to my teeth.

I also switched to an aluminium free deodorant as I try to eliminate heavy metals from any products I use. I purchased some body lotions that are coconut or olive oil based since I suffer from dry skin over the winter, and they work great.

A positive on the food side of things, I have been experimenting with fruit smoothies. One of my favourite ingredients is grapefruit. It gives the smoothie a nice tang. Grapefruit and berries, give it a try. Just blend it well since the grapefruit is pulpy.

Okay, I think that’s enough for today. Until next time.

Eating For Energy-Perfect Health Smoothie Benefits

November 3rd, 2010

Response to yesterdays article,”Eating For Energy-Simple Breakfast Idea-Made Simple” created quite a stir at home. Pierrette asked me,”When was the last time you had your kids eating 3 fruit for breakfast?”

The smoothie I told you about yesterday was actually one I created for my daughter. She just had a tooth pulled and needed energy without any danger of getting anything caught in the new hole in her mouth. We all know how kids are, right? This was my chance to make a healthy drink and keep her honest about her commitment to maintain great health. Well, she loved it and she asked me,“Dad, what energy does a smoothie give us?

Two questions from the inside and many more on the net. I guess many of you need to learn more about breakfast, smoothies, energy.

We often assume and take for granted the knowledge we have learned from our parents and teachers. Our kids should know the benefits of fruit, don’t they? Are your kids getting all the advantages of 3 fruits most days of the week? They should. Having a smoothie in the morning is the best healthy way to ensure the vitamin and mineral content they need to get their day off with a bang. Read the following and learn about the goodness of healthy, raw fruits:http://www.perfectsmoothie.com/benefits-daily-smoothie/

Eating For Energy-Simple Breakfast Idea-Made Simple

November 2nd, 2010

Eating healthy does not have to be complicated. Sometimes we get caught up in the old,”don’t have the time routine”  in the morning. Well let’s keep it as simple as possible.

Here is a great boost to your morning made super easy:

Smoothie 101 made easy: Serves 1

What you need: a blender with just a couple of speeds will do. They are on sale everywhere, all the time.

1 banana, any size will do. A little ripe is best.

1 pear, any size. They are available all over the world most of the year.

1 peach, any size is great. Available in most stores, year round.

Water to taste for smoothie consistency. Please everyone in the family with this ingredient.

1 or 2 cubes of ice. Again this is in order to please everyone. Some like it cooler than others.

Preparation:

  1. Peel the banana(fresh or frozen), cut in bite size pieces and add to the blender.
  2. Peel the pear, cut in two and remove heart, cut in bite size pieces and add to banana in blender.
  3. Peel the peach and cut into bite size pieces, remove the center core, add pieces to the banana and pear in the blender.
  4. Add a little water and ice to taste, temperature and smoothness and “voila“(there you have it).
  5. Sorry, I forgot, turn on the blender just for 1 or 2 minutes.
  6. Serve in a tall glass and enjoy.

FreshFruitSmoothie

This 3 fruit recipe tastes great and you can mix and match any of your favorite fruits(always have the banana as one of the fruit, when possible, for smoothness). You will be amazed at the results.

Yes Eating For Energy will give you the boost you need, quickly to get the morning off just right. Everyone in the family can learn to make their own and you know it is healthy.

Fruit in the morning helps eliminate the waste in your body and supplies the fiber you need to get going right everyday.

Try it and spread the news. It is this simple.

Liquid Diet

October 9th, 2010

HPIM1664I was inspired this morning by Audra and Pierre’s posts to try something I had yet to try – to only drink juices and smoothies for an entire day.

For a late breakfast (I slept in) I had a green juice, albeit it was a powder I dissolved into a glass of water. After a frustrating experience with my juicer, I retired it, but after watching a video on juicing Yuri posted a little while ago, I was contemplating giving my juicer a second chance, and after reading the entries posted this morning, I was ready.

For lunch, I made Pierre’s blueberry smoothie, except mine was more a mixed berry smoothie and it turned out pink. It was fabulous, and I look forward to making many many more. Because of the restrictive diet I’m following that limits my fruit to low-sugar fruits only, I do not normally eat bananas or grapes, so I’ll have to wait patiently, or not so patiently, to try this again. I also froze the grape puree my juicer spit out.

I gave some to my dad to try. He was only supposed to take a sip because it was more for my mom, and he ended up taking a second “sip” and drinking half of it. He loved it and would definitely drink it again. I’m certain my mom will like it when she tries her share.

Since my juicer performed so admirably juicing the grapes for my smoothie, I decided to go ahead and try Audra’s juice recipe. My juicer definitely does not like the leafy greens, which is my problem with it since that is what I want to juice. In the end I persevered and made a small glass of the juice. It was definitely energizing, even with the small serving I had, although I did forget to add the ginger, which was probably best in the long run since it would have overpowered everything else and I wouldn’t have enjoyed it. With ginger, I have learned a little goes a long way, and it is something I’m slowly trying to incorporate more of so I acquire a liking for it.

Back to my day. Since I felt so good, I went and did a 20 min workout on the treadmill, and no, I didn’t just do a nice leisurely pace. I know better than that. In fact, I pushed myself and did some intervals at a faster pace than I’ve ever tried before.

Dinner was make-it-up-as-I-go, with a juice made from a pear, carrot and cabbage. I was hoping the cabbage would process better than the spinach. It was okay and tasted mostly of pear. Since it made a very small glass, I decided to make a second smoothie, this time with only the mixed berries and a bit of the frozen grape puree from my earlier smoothie. I got watered down raspberries as a result. I think banana must be what gives a smoothie it’s nice creamy texture since mine was lacking that, but it was a good excuse to add some more flax seed and it did the job of filling me up.

Also, throughout the day I was drinking plenty of water.

So if anyone has doubts about being able to function on liquids only, the answer is you definitely can. Admittedly, I wasn’t overly active today, but neither did I drink very much, so upping the quantity of juice and smoothies you drink should compensate for more activity.

A final note about my juicer. I went out and purchased the cheapest juicer I could to see if I even liked juicing. It’s small, and I have to cut my fruit and vegetables into tiny pieces to feed them into the juicer. I was envious watching Yuri stuff entire stalks of kale into his juicer. I think I’m confident that if I had a better juicer it is something I would do more of.

Does anyone out there have a juicer they like and would recommend? If you do, please let me know. Thanks.

Having a Smoothie Breakfast-Eating For Energy

October 9th, 2010

The start of a child’s day should be memorable. The foods he(she) starts with must do two specific things:

  1. The food choice should be a cleanser to help digestion early in the morning before going off to school or daycare.
  2. The food choice should be rich in vitamins and minerals to prepare and supply the “Energy” needed to sustain attention span throughout the morning.

Here is a smoothie Pierrette just invented and I was so excited about the taste I really needed to share it with all of you right now.

Serves 1:ingredients

1 cup of Red Grape juice

1/2 cup fresh(frozen) blueberriessmoothie bleu

1 whole banana

1 tablespoon ground flax seed

ice

water

Preparation:

Juice fresh Red Grapes in a juicer.

Add the juice and all other ingredients in a blender and add ice and water to the smoothness you like.

P.S. No added anything. This is just pure taste, natural healthy food. Easy to prepare and quick to get everyone off in the morning. Try it and tell Pierrette & I what you think.

P.S.S. Here is a new one to add to your collection Yuri.

Eating For Energy has many other great ideas for you and the whole family. Get it today.

Thanks
